AI Search Optimization for Small Businesses in Bradenton and Sarasota

Tell me your business and your city. I will show you how ChatGPT and Google's AI describe you today, and what I would improve first.

By Bernard Sokolowski, founder of Starwheel Websites. Updated October 3, 2026.

More of your customers now ask before they search. They type a full question into ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode, something like "who installs impact windows in Bradenton and can start before hurricane season," and they get back a short answer with two or three names in it. If your business is missing from that answer, or described wrongly in it, you lose the call without ever knowing there was one.

AI search optimization is the work of making your business easy for those tools to find, understand and recommend. Our AI search optimization services cover three things: the pages on your website, your Google Business Profile, and the listings and reviews that describe you everywhere else.

At Starwheel Websites you work directly with me. We bring the writing, design, WordPress development and search work together, so one team plans the improvement, builds it and shows you what changed.

What is AI search optimization?

AI search optimization helps a business appear, and be described accurately, in answers from tools such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. You may also see it called AI SEO, generative engine optimization (GEO) or answer engine optimization (AEO). It builds on solid SEO and local SEO. It does not replace them. [1]

How it works at a glance

What we improve

The three things AI tools read about you: the pages on your website, your Google Business Profile, and the listings and reviews that describe you everywhere else.

The launch project

A one time project that gets the foundation right. Steps 1 to 12 below cover your pages, business details, profiles, listings and technical access.

Ongoing work

Optional, and agreed separately. Steps 13 to 18 check how you appear in AI answers, choose the next improvement and show you what changed.

A note on scope: this page describes our full approach. Your written proposal lists which of these tasks are included for your business, so you know the scope before any work begins.

AI search by the numbers

Your customers have already changed how they look for local businesses. Six figures show how far it has gone.

45%
of US consumers now use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations
1 billion+
people use ChatGPT every week
2.5 billion
people use Google's AI Overviews every month
6 in 10
US adults say they read the AI summaries at the top of search results
8% vs 15%
Google users clicked a regular result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, and on 15% when it did not
28.5%
of all sources cited in local AI answers were Google Business Profiles

What this means for a local business: people still find you through Google, but more of them read an answer before they click anything. That answer is built from your website, your business profile and your listings, which are the three things this page is about.

How SEO, local SEO, GEO and AEO work together

These are four names for overlapping work. Some agencies sell them as separate packages: AI SEO, generative engine optimization services, AEO services, local SEO for small business. We treat them as one job because they share one foundation: accurate business details, pages that search tools can reach, and content that answers what your customers ask.

Google says as much about its own AI features, which run on the same core systems that rank regular results. [1]

Approach

What it aims for

What we work on

SEO (search engine optimization)

Being found in regular search results

Page content, titles, internal links and technical access

Local SEO

Being found for a service in a place

Service and city pages, Google Business Profile, listings and reviews

GEO (generative engine optimization)

Being used as a source in answers written by AI [2]

Complete, well organized information that AI tools can find, interpret and cite

AEO (answer engine optimization)

Being the direct answer to a question

Answers placed first, FAQs, clear definitions and confirmed facts

Being mentioned, earning a linked citation and receiving an inquiry are three different results. An AI answer can recommend your business and link to a directory. That is why we look at your website and at the outside sources that describe you.

Who this is for

If your customers live or stay in Manatee or Sarasota County and ask questions before they buy, this applies to you.

  • Businesses that travel to customers: contractors, roofers, cleaners, landscapers, mobile detailers and other service area businesses.

  • Storefronts and offices customers visit: restaurants, salons, shops, medical and dental practices.

  • Professional services where trust decides the call: attorneys, accountants, insurance and real estate.

Our area adds a twist. New residents and seasonal visitors arrive without a plumber, a dentist or a favorite restaurant, and asking an AI tool is an easy first step.

At launch: how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and AI assistants

This is what our AI search optimization services include. We plan a new website with content, design and search setup together. For a website you already have, we start by finding what needs improving.

Either way, your proposal lists the pages, profiles and setup work we will complete, so you know what you are paying for.

1. Start with your customers, services and cities

We begin with the work you want more calls for and the places you want them from. Then we list what customers ask before they feel ready to call.

A homeowner in Lakewood Ranch asks about cost, preparation and cleanup. A property manager on Anna Maria Island asks about scheduling, access and billing. It is the same service with different questions, and each one deserves an answer on your site.

What this step covers:

  • A short list of priority services, cities and customer types

  • The search terms and questions people use around them

  • A page plan built on the opportunities your business can serve

Why this could help AI: A question that names a job, a city and a specific need gives AI several things to match. Your content can answer each one.

2. Give every important service its own page

A service buried in a list cannot answer much. Your main services need pages with enough detail to support a decision, connected by internal links so visitors and search engines can reach them. [9]

We split services into separate pages when the customer, the process or the questions differ. Related work shares a page when one explanation covers it.

What this step covers:

  • A page for each core service, titled for the service and the place

  • Links connecting services, city pages, FAQs and contact options

  • Essential information as readable text, never locked inside an image

Why this could help AI: A connected site gives search systems a route from your overview to the page that answers a more specific question.

3. Write service pages that help customers decide

The best service page answers three things up front: what you do, who it suits and how the work happens. Then it covers the details that change the decision.

Take an installation service. Are materials, removal and cleanup included? If the price varies, what moves it? A customer who knows that is asking you to quote the right job, and you spend less time on calls that go nowhere.

The customer wonders

The page states

What is included?

The service, its limits and what costs extra

How does it work?

Preparation, scheduling and the steps involved

What will it cost?

Confirmed prices or ranges, with what changes them

Is it for me?

The customers and cities you serve, and how to request an estimate

Why this could help AI: Details on what is included and what it costs let an answer explain whether the service fits someone's job or budget.

4. Build content around the cities you serve

Service and place belong together. Someone looking for a contractor in Bradenton needs to know you do their kind of work and that you will come to their address.

We build city pages around the services available there, what local customers need and the practical details. For a storefront that means the address, directions, parking and photos of the entrance. For a business that travels it means coverage, scheduling and any travel limits, with the service area set correctly on your business profiles. [10]

One rule applies to every city page: it has to say something true and specific about serving that city. Swapping Sarasota for Palmetto in the same paragraph helps nobody.

Why this could help AI: Service and location details together establish the local fit: this business does this work for customers in this area.

5. Answer the questions that hold up a call

Good FAQs cover what people ask before buying: cost, timing, preparation, whether it suits their situation, and what happens when the job is more complicated than usual. The answer comes first and the explanation follows.

If someone asks whether they need to be home, say yes or no before describing the access arrangements. Each answer should make sense on its own, with the conditions that keep it accurate.

What this step covers:

  • Questions gathered from your own customer conversations and from search research

  • Direct answers written from confirmed business information

  • FAQs placed beside the service or location they support

Why this could help AI: Microsoft's guidance for its own AI results says clear headings, tables and FAQ sections make content easier for AI systems to reference accurately. [11]

6. Show your experience

People and AI tools both look for reasons to trust what a page says. Google's quality guidance describes this as experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust, and names trust as the most important of the four. [12]

So we make yours visible: who owns the business, who does the work, what they are qualified to do, and photos that are yours and nobody else's.

What this step covers:

  • An introduction to the owner, the team and the responsible professionals

  • Qualifications, years in business and figures, each verified before it is published

  • Original photos of your people, premises, process and finished work

  • Real reviews that help a customer understand the experience

Why this could help AI: Named people, verifiable facts and supporting sources give an answer evidence it can attribute to your business.

7. Connect your business details with schema markup

Schema markup is a structured description of your business and your page, written for machines. It can state plainly that this service is provided by this business in these areas. [13]

We create and check the markup through your website's existing setup. Two rules guide it. The markup must match what customers can read on the page, [14] and the same business must be identified the same way across related pages.

What this step covers:

  • LocalBusiness or Organization markup identifying your business, hours, contact details and location

  • Service markup on core service pages, naming the provider and the areas served

  • A check for errors, missing details and conflicts

Google is clear that structured data is not required for its AI features and that no special markup unlocks them. [1] We use it because it removes ambiguity and keeps your pages eligible for rich results.

Why this could help AI: For systems that read structured data, schema spells out who provides the service, where it is available and which facts belong together.

Schema sounds technical, and you never have to touch it. I handle the setup.

8. Complete your Google Business Profile and review setup

Your Google Business Profile puts your services, hours, photos, directions and reviews in the places people use to find local businesses. In a 2026 study of local AI answers, Google Business Profiles made up more than a quarter of all the sources cited. [8]

Google states that businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. [15]

What this step covers:

  • Ownership and access confirmed, with the correct storefront or service area setup

  • Accurate categories, services, hours, attributes and links, including an appointment link

  • Photos that help people recognize the business or understand the work

  • A simple way to ask for reviews: a link, a QR code, or requests by email and text

Why this could help AI: Your profile gives Google local facts beyond a website link, including the details needed to answer questions about services, hours and access.

9. Get your listings right beyond Google

Different AI tools lean on different sources. Siri reads Apple's place cards. [29] Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing. [33] Other tools pull from maps, directories and professional associations. One accurate set of business details, repeated everywhere, matters more than it used to.

We confirm your name, address or service area, phone, hours and website once. Then we update the listings that count: Bing Places, Apple Business, local chambers of commerce and the directories for your trade.

What this step covers:

  • One confirmed set of business details

  • Updated listings on the platforms and directories your customers use

  • A record of what was submitted, what is published and what is still pending

Why this could help AI: When an answer draws on a directory or map listing, accurate information there means AI describes the same business customers see on your website.

10. Open the door to search and AI crawlers

A page that cannot be reached cannot be recommended. We check your website, hosting and security settings for anything blocking the tools you want to be found by.

Many site owners miss one detail: the crawlers that power AI search are separate from the ones that collect training data. [16] [17] [18]

Crawler

What it does

Googlebot

Feeds Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode

OAI-SearchBot

Lets your site appear in ChatGPT search answers

GPTBot

Collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models

PerplexityBot

Surfaces and links websites in Perplexity's results

Google-Extended

Controls use of your content for Gemini training, with no effect on Google Search

You can welcome the search crawlers and still say no to training. We set that up the way you want it.

What this step covers:

  • Priority pages checked for crawl blocks, indexing settings and conflicting URLs

  • Redirects and sitemap entries reviewed

  • IndexNow set up where supported, which tells Bing and other participating engines when a page changes [19]

  • An llms.txt file summarizing your services, areas and key pages

A note on llms.txt: Google says its Search does not use these files, and that they neither help nor harm your visibility there. [1] We include one because it costs little and other tools may read it.

Why this could help AI: Retrieval starts with access. Removing a technical barrier gives a search tool the chance to reach the page and read its answer.

11. Make it easy to read, browse and contact you

Being recommended is half the job. When someone arrives, they need to read your service details, check your area and reach you comfortably from a phone.

We test that path and fix slow loading, layouts that jump and buttons that do not respond. Google's Core Web Vitals measure those same three things: loading, responsiveness and visual stability. [20]

What this step covers:

  • Faster image delivery and fewer avoidable delays

  • Text, menus, tables and buttons that work on small screens

  • Forms, phone links and booking paths tested from start to finish

  • Confirmation that inquiries reach you with the details you need

Why this could help AI: The benefit lands after the recommendation. A visitor can understand the offer and contact you, and that is the moment visibility becomes an inquiry.

12. Hand you a record of the launch

At launch you receive a list of the pages, profiles and setup work completed, plus anything still waiting on an outside party.

We also save a baseline: the searches we ran, the AI answers we got, the dates, and the sources those answers cited. Later reviews compare the same services, cities and questions against it.

What this step covers:

  • A completion list with page links and setup notes

  • Search and analytics accounts connected, with inquiry tracking tested

  • Baseline searches and AI answers saved for comparison

Why this could help AI: The starting record shows which services and locations already appear in the answers we check, so the next improvement is chosen from evidence.

See where you stand before you decide anything.

After launch: turn findings into finished improvements

AI answers change, competitors publish, and your own business adds services and cities. After launch we use what the checks show, along with the new questions your customers ask, to choose the next improvement. You always know what we are working on, and you get a record of what changed.

The loop: Scan → prioritize → prepare edits → approve and publish → scan again.

13. Check where you appear and how you are described

An AI answer can mention your business and still get an important detail wrong. So we look past whether you appear, to the services, cities, prices and reputation the answer describes and the sources it links.

We run an agreed set of questions in the AI tools we track. When an answer is wrong, we follow its sources to find where the error started.

What this step covers:

  • Results for your chosen questions, including service and city combinations

  • A log of mentions, cited sources, praise, criticism and factual mistakes

  • Notes on competing pages and what they cover that yours does not

Why this could help AI: Tracing a wrong description to its source gives us something specific to correct, and a way to check whether later answers pick up the fix.

Already have a website? Start with a check of where you appear today.

14. Choose the improvement that matters most

Not every finding deserves work. If a service page leaves people unsure what is included, fixing that explanation usually beats publishing another general article.

We weigh the likely benefit against the effort. You see what we recommend, why it matters, what it includes and how we will check it.

Why this could help AI: Effort goes first to missing answers, incorrect facts and access problems, the three things most likely to change what customers are told.

15. Strengthen the pages you already have

Real questions from real customers are the best editing brief. When calls, emails or AI checks show that a page leaves something unanswered, we add the missing piece: a price range, a condition, a timeline, a better photo. Then we update the schema and check the published page.

Why this could help AI: A fuller page can answer the second and third question a customer asks, which is how AI conversations tend to go.

One clear next step beats a long to do list. Let's find yours.

16. Add a service or city page when the research earns it

When research points to a new service, city or customer group, we decide whether it needs its own page or belongs on an existing one. A new page is built in your site's design, connected to related services and locations, and checked on mobile before it goes live.

Why this could help AI: A dedicated page gathers a service, its coverage area and its local details into one source a search system can reference.

Calendar card and a business profile card with refresh arrows and a star bubble, keeping Bradenton profiles current

17. Keep profiles, reviews and public information current

New hours, services and coverage areas need to reach every place customers check. Platforms also change listings on their own: Google may update a profile when its sources suggest the information is out of date. [21] We watch your priority listings for both.

We prepare Google posts with new photos and service updates, confirm that review requests still work, and draft replies for your approval. Reviews are requested honestly, with no incentives and no scripted wording, both of which Google prohibits. [22]

Why this could help AI: Current profiles and fresh customer feedback give AI tools newer material to draw from.

Adding a service or a city this year? Let's plan the page before you need it.

18. Show what changed and what comes next

Your report makes the work easy to inspect: what changed, where it changed and how it was checked.

We bring in the data that exists. Google Search Console now reports how often your pages are shown in AI Overviews and AI Mode. [23] Bing Webmaster Tools reports how often your pages are cited in Microsoft's AI answers, along with the phrases behind those citations. [11] Sampled AI answers add context on how your business is described.

What this step covers:

  • Links to finished pages, updated profiles and other completed work

  • Mentions, linked citations, website visits and inquiries, each reported separately

  • Rechecked issues and the next priorities

Why this could help AI: Checking the published work confirms each change was made properly, and what we learn picks the next one.

Efficient tools, personal attention

Scans, AI tools and automation help us research, draft, schedule posts and prepare reports. A person checks the facts, the writing and the finished page before any work is called complete. That person is usually me.

Keeping the writing, design and technical work under one roof means a service update arrives whole: the explanation, the layout, the links and the search details together.

You work directly with me, start to finish. Tell me about your business.

When a larger effort makes sense

Some opportunities need a bigger commitment. They are worth it when they serve a business goal and the website's basics are already covered.

Questions about local SEO and AI search

Yes. We review the content, pages, business details and technical setup, then recommend what to improve first. Some websites need a few updates and others need more.

For your priority cities, yes, when we can explain the services available there, answer local questions and give that audience a reason to contact you. Smaller nearby areas can sit within a service area overview.

Then your site explains where you travel and which services are available there. Your profile is set up as a service area business, or as a hybrid business if customers also visit a staffed location. [10]

You can inspect finished work the day it is published. Search systems take longer: Google says some changes take effect in hours and others take months. [9] We review the trend as the data comes in.

It depends on your goals. New services, target cities and unanswered questions support regular improvements. Other businesses suit a launch project followed by occasional reviews. We agree on the work before starting.

No. Schema explains your business details and FAQs answer customer questions, but each platform decides what to use. Google's FAQ rich results stopped appearing in search on May 7, 2026, [24] and the answers still do their job on your page.

Yes. We agree on the tools and questions to check, then report what we find. AI answers vary from one day and one user to the next, so each report also shows the sources reviewed and the work completed.

They are three names for the same goal: being found, described accurately and recommended in AI answers. AI SEO is the everyday term. Generative engine optimization, or GEO, usually refers to tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Answer engine optimization, or AEO, grew out of voice search and direct answers. Whether a company offers AI SEO agency work, generative engine optimization services or AEO services, the tasks overlap: clear service pages, accurate business details, schema, listings and reviews. We treat it as one job alongside regular SEO, because Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO. [1]

Ask the way a customer would. Open ChatGPT, Google's AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, then type a real question, such as who to call for your service in your city. Try several wordings, because answers shift from one phrasing to the next. Note whether you appear, what is said about you and which sources are linked. For firmer numbers, Google Search Console reports how often your pages show in its AI features, and Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations in Microsoft's AI answers. My free AI answer check runs a few of these questions for one service and one city, then gives you a short summary and three recommended improvements. [23] [11]

Strong rankings are a real head start, because Google's AI features run on the same systems that rank regular results. They do not finish the job. AI tools answer longer questions that combine a service, a city, a budget and a deadline, and they build the answer from your profile, your listings and your reviews as well as your pages. A business can rank first for its main term and still be left out of that answer, or described with old hours and missing services. A quick check tells you which situation you are in. [1]

Yes, and the habit grew fast. In BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey, 45% of US consumers said they use ChatGPT or other AI tools for local business recommendations, making AI the third most popular source. ChatGPT was the most used tool, followed by Google's AI Mode. Pew Research Center found that six in ten US adults read the AI summaries above search results. Older habits have not gone away, since 97% of consumers still read online reviews. The practical point is that customers now meet your business in several places before they ever visit your website. [3] [30] [6]

Start by finding where the mistake came from. Most wrong answers trace back to a source: an old directory listing, an outdated page on your own site, or a profile nobody has touched in years. Correct it there first, because that is what the tools read. Then tell the platform. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode have a thumbs down and a Report a problem option under each answer, and ChatGPT has a thumbs down under each reply. Neither company promises a correction, so the dependable fix is accurate sources, followed by a recheck a few weeks later. [25]

They shape what gets said about you, and Google confirms they affect local ranking: more reviews and positive ratings can help. Google also uses AI to summarize what reviewers say about a place, and BrightLocal found that 82% of consumers read those AI written summaries. So the themes in your reviews, good and bad, can end up in the short description a customer reads first. The approach that works is steady and honest. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a link or QR code, never offer incentives, and reply to what people write, including the criticism. [15] [32] [3]

No. Advertising does not buy a place in the answer itself. Google states that no one can pay for better placement in its organic results, and OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers. What ads can do is appear beside the answer. Google shows ads above, below and inside AI Overviews, labeled Sponsored, and ChatGPT now shows labeled ads to people on its free plan. Think of them as two separate tools. Ads rent attention for as long as you keep paying. The work described on this page builds the facts that answers are written from. [26] [27] [35]

You can, and Google does not penalize content for being written with AI. Its guidance says these tools are useful for research and structure, and it warns against producing many pages that add no value for readers. The real risk for a local business is sameness. An AI tool has never seen your pricing, your process, your crew or the house you finished last week, so it writes what every competitor's page already says. Use it for a first draft if it helps, then add what only you know and check every fact before publishing. [28]

For most local businesses, no, at least not the search ones. The crawlers that power AI search are separate from those that gather training data. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search and GPTBot for training, and a site that blocks the search crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT's search answers. Google offers a similar split: Google-Extended controls training for Gemini without touching your place in Search. So you can stay visible to customers and still decline training if you prefer. We check your settings, since security plugins and hosts sometimes block these crawlers without telling you. [16] [17]

They matter, though less than your own website and listings. Studies of AI citations keep finding YouTube and Reddit among the most cited sites in Google's AI answers, and the mix shifts from month to month. For local businesses the picture is steadier. In BrightLocal's 2026 study of local AI answers, Google Business Profiles supplied more than a quarter of all citations, and most of the cited websites belonged to individual businesses. Keep your name, services and contact details consistent on the platforms you already use, and add a few helpful videos if your work shows well on camera. [31] [8]

A good SEO company is already doing much of it, and Google itself says that optimizing for its AI features is still SEO. The difference is where we look. We read the actual answers AI tools give about your business, trace the sources behind them, and treat your listings on Bing, Apple and industry directories as seriously as your Google profile. We also check that AI search crawlers can reach your site, and we report AI visibility separately from regular traffic. A fair question for any provider is simple: when did you last check what ChatGPT says about my business? [1]

Largely yes, because voice assistants read the same kinds of sources. Siri uses Apple's place cards, which you manage through Apple Business, the platform that replaced Apple Business Connect in April 2026. Microsoft Copilot draws on Bing, where your listing is managed through Bing Places for Business. Amazon has named Yelp as a source of local business information for Alexa. None of these read your website the way a person does, which is why accurate listings carry weight. Claiming and correcting those profiles is part of the launch work, so a spoken answer matches the one on screen. [29] [33] [34]

The free check looks at one priority service in one city. I ask a few questions a customer would ask in ChatGPT and Google's AI, then send you a short summary of what appeared: whether your business was named, how it was described and which sources were used. You also get the three improvements I would make first. It needs no account access and carries no obligation. Fuller audits, account reviews and detailed plans are part of paid work, and each proposal lists what is included.

It depends on how much needs doing, so I quote each project after looking at it. A five page site for a mobile business needs far less work than a forty page site serving several cities. Everything starts with the free AI answer check, which costs nothing and commits you to nothing. From there you receive a written proposal listing the pages, profiles and setup work included, with one price for the launch project. Ongoing improvement is optional and agreed separately. You approve the scope before any work begins, and nothing is added without asking.
